Abstract. The indices of children’s oculomotor activity during reading are determined by the maturity level of cognitive processes involved in the psychophysiological structure of reading and underlie the rate of reading skill development from ages 6 – 7 to 9 – 10 years. The lack of differences in the basic indices of eye movements between normally- and poorly-reading children indicates different rates of reading skill improvement in children with different initial levels of skill development (poorly-reading children had higher rates of skill development). This might be explained by the later formation of rudimentary cognitive functions in these children.
Keywords: reading; eye movement; children
